Omega-3s, 6s, & 9s – Why They’re Important

For several years, doctors, researchers, and health experts have been pointing out the many health benefits of EFA’s or essential fatty acids. The kind that gets the most press are the Omega-3 essential fatty acids, but there are other kinds.

Most people are lacking in Omega-3s or they have an imbalance between the types. There is a lot of research available examining why taking an Omega supplement each day might help maintain good health.

What are the differences between the different fatty acids?

The reason for the name omega is complicated. Each fatty acid chain has an end called an omega. The first double bond on the carbon chain in the fatty acid before the omega gives it the number, whether it’s three, six, or nine away.

The human body cannot produce two kinds of EFAs, Omega-3 and Omega-6. We have to take them in through our diet.

Omega-3s

Omega-3s are essential for brain, heart, and circulatory health. These fatty acids ensure that there is adequate blood flow to the areas of the brain which affect cognitive ability during our entire lives. Omega 3s act as a powerful antioxidant.

Omega-3s can be found in abundance in plant-based foods like olive oil, spinach, mangoes, lettuce, walnuts, and cold-water fish such as salmon, Atlantic cod, mussels, and snow crab.

There are three types of Omega-3 EFAs–ALA, EPA, and DHA. Scientists have found that the EPAs found in Omega-3 rich foods provide the most benefit. Some research teams have discovered a potential link between EFAs and warding off some forms of depression. Omega-3s are especially important toward brain function in infants, small children, and expectant mothers.

Omega-6s

Omega-6s can be found in foods such as cereals, any kind of meat, dairy products, and eggs, baked goods such as cookies, cakes, muffins, and most fast food. We can also find Omega-6s in some cooking oils such as corn, safflower, canola, and sunflower.

If you compare the list of foods between Omega-3 and Omega-6, it’s clear that most Americans are getting their fats from Omega-6 sources.

Omega 9’s

Unlike Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s, which must be taken in from outside, your body can create Omega-9s on its own. However, you can give the body some help. Omega-9s are critical fatty acids because they help ensure the cells in our body function properly. Omega-9s are found in olive oil, seeds, and nuts.

Why do they need to be balanced?

omega food

Over the past two decades, researchers have found that the typical Western diet is deficient in Omega-3s and is more heavily saturated with Omega-6s. Our diets work best when there is more of a balance between Omega-3s and Omega-6s in the diet.

What kind of health issues can such an imbalance cause?

Not getting enough or an imbalance of fatty acids can cause several health issues in the body. Some of these issues may include:

  • Decreased cognitive ability and overall brain function
  • Increased inflammation in the body
  • Increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and some forms of cancer.

Taking a daily supplement can help balance the essential fatty acids in the body in ways that just our daily diets may not be able to do. Because our bodies are not very efficient in breaking down EFAs, supplementation is often needed to correct the problem.

How does the supplement help?

According to reports, scientists have seen a clear link between taking a daily supplement of Omega-3s, 6s, and 9s and the reduction of specific potential health issues.

Some things that an Omega supplement may help are:

  • Improved quality of sleep
  • A reduction in the visible signs of aging in the skin
  • Healthy hair, skin, and nails
  • Reduction of menstrual cramping
  • A reduced risk of developing autoimmune diseases like diabetes
  • Improved overall joint and bone health
  • Reduced risk of fatty liver disease
  • Maintaining brain and cognitive health
  • Reduction in feelings of bipolar disorder or depression and mood swings

A good Omega 3, 6, and 9 supplement can ensure that the EFAs are balanced and your body receives the most benefit.

How much should I be taking?
